Looks fantastic. What does everyone else think? Leave a comment.

I'm going to do an article on the different versions of Lewis Carroll's book soon.

Roddy Piper kicks ugly alien ass in They Live, my favourite John Carpenter movie.

Roddy plays Nada, a construction worker who's struggling to find work. He hooks up with Frank, played by the great Keith David, who helps him get work, and takes him to a homeless community where they can get their heads down.

Whilst there Nada discovers a pair of sunglasses and when he puts them on he discovers that half the population of the city are super gross alien skeletors, and they've got all the best jobs.

He realises that the aliens have taken over the world, and they've been here forever, pulling the wool over our eyes and keeping us in a kind of comatose state of ignorance. The billboards all read slogans like, OBEY; MARRY AND REPRODUCE; and most chillingly of all, banknotes read, THIS IS YOUR GOD.

Roddy's not about to give his planet to a bunch of bony-faced space yuppies, so he tools up and goes on a kill-crazy rampage in a bank.

Soon after, he's on the run - funny that - and gets in with an underground movement, who are producing more sunglasses, to wake up the rest of humanity. He also gets the hots for Holly, a company babe with well scary eyes.

It's kind of like the Matrix, only better. It's an allegory for eighties greed and the 'me' generation and when I first saw it, it really made me think about the people in power and those with none. Later, I read 1984 which shattered my perception of the world forever.

See this movie if you haven't already, and if you have, let me know what you though of it.

Vamp

There are a lot of Vampire movies about at the moment aren't there? There's Twighlight, 30 Days of Night, Underworld, The Foresaken. There's even a new Buffy movie on the cards. But I want to big up a little cult classic called Vamp.

Vamp stars Grace Jones no less and shares a common theme with Tarrantino's Dusk 'Till Dawn.

The main characters are Keith and AJ, played by Chris Makepiece and Robert Rustler respectively, as two frat buddies who plan a road trip to a downtown strip club, in order to hire a girl for their initiation party.

What they don't know is that the strip club in question is run by a gang of bloodthirsty vampires.

It's a great little movie with plenty of laughs mixed in with the shocks and stand out performances from Grace Jones, who takes a non-speaking role, and who looks utterly beguiling, and also Hy Pyke, who played the laconic announcer at the club.

This is a full-on eighties schlock-horror, even down to the outrageous and over the top neon colour pallette. It's typical of many movies at the time that looked like pop videos. It isn't of the same quality of similarly themed movies of the time such as the Lost Boys, but I really loved it and the love interest, Dedee Pfeiffer is pretty cute.

Kid Ninja

June 6th 2009 21:50
The kids these days are all into High School Musical. They just love watching Zac Efron and the gang singing and dancing their little sweaters and pom-poms off. They love to emulate the scenes, singing along to their favourite songs. There's a steady stream of merchandise from singing dolls to lunch boxes featuring the squeaky clean, bleached-white toothy grinning starlets who no doubt will go on to be the next big thing in the charts.

When I was a kid it was ninja movies.

Revenge of the Ninja
Courtesey of Wikipedia

There was Ninja Massacre, Ninja Strike Force, Ninja Vs. Ninja even Zombie Vs. Ninja - although I never saw that one. The one I remember most though is Revenge of the Ninja, starring Shô Kosugi, as Cho Tanaka. The movie begins with Cho's family being massacred by a Ninja death squad. He and his son, Kane flee to America and open a gallery with Cho's friend and business partner, Braden.

However, the gallery is a front for smuggling cocaine, and when Cho's son witnesses his first hand, Braden must eliminate him.

Revenge of the Ninja was part of the Ninja Trilogy, which began with Enter the Ninja and concluded with Ninja III: Domination.

The one resounding image I had of that movie was when Sho, after dscovering his son has been kidnapped by Braden, takes out the sword he swore he'd never use in combat again and breaks the seal.

Admittedly, the movie now looks more like the 1980's live action TV version of Spiderman, except with ninjas, but the fight scenes still pack a punch and like I said, the scene with the sword being released from it's bond sent a shiver of nostalgia down my spine.

So if you're tired of the all singing all dancing Zac and you're looking for something a little zestier, try a ninja movie; it never did me any harm.

If you've read my previous posts then you'll know about my love of the movie Ghostbusters. That film was the making of me; after stepping out of the theatre my mind was firmly made up - I was going to be Peter Venkman

David Carradine began his film career as Cal Dodge in the movie Taggart, but to most he was known as Kwai Chang Caine in the TV series, Kung Fu and to modern audiences as Bill in Tarrantino's Kill Bill. Ironically, he had no knowledge of martial arts before his television role, but after landing the part, his interest grew

Connect Four - The Movie!
Let Strategy Commence!

I've heard rumors that Battleship, the long running board game of mine and possibly your childhood, is being made into a Hollywood movie. Quite how this will look I'm not sure. Is it a live action version of the game, if so what makes it different to every other naval action movie out there

The internet is fast becoming a great source of all those kooky movies you used to stay up till 3.00 in the morning to watch, featuring saucermen, platinum blonde bombshells and abysmal acting. I thought I'd share a few of my favourite sites and big up all those who provide the content

Rules of the Road

May 30th 2009 21:08
There are many examples of 'Road' movies, but what are the essential ingredients that make up the genre. I think to begin with you need to distinguish the difference between a road movie and a chase movie. To me, Speed is not a road movie. Little Miss Sunshine, now that's a road movie.

Other examples of what I see as true Road films are Sideways, Roadkill, The Straight Story, Vanishing Point, Wild at Heart... I could go on. Basically, they're slices of Americana that run at cruising speed, where the emphasis is on self discovery
